India Art Fair - 2017

The anticipated ninth edition of the Indian Art Fair marked the start of the cultural and eventful art calendar. For four days, from the 2nd to the 5th of February, patrons, art dealers, and curious visitors enjoyed a dynamic range of Contemporary and Modern Art, with a hint of Saxophone tunes serving as the background score.

The large attraction this year were the number of phenomenal works by Master Artists, be it S.H Raza, M.F. Husain or Souza, curated at multiple galleries. Gallery DAG Modern presented artists this through an almost narrative-tour of India’s rich art. You started with Rabindranath Tagore’s drawing leading through Manjit Bawa’ vivid red background, Natvar Bhavsar’s color compositions leading to M.F. Husain masterpiece, “British Raj-Procession”.

Exploration of contemporary mediums was significant throughout the fair-The highlight was artistic dynamic duo, Thukral and Tagra’s, on-site interactive project, Memoir Bar. It allowed visitors were to reflect on a distinct memory and solidify it in color cement as part of a larger installation, capturing colorful collective memories and emotions.

This year’s cohort of significant domestic galleries was promising The influx of South East Asian and European galleries establishing it as the prime culturalevent of the month.New York-based Aicon Gallery displayed installations of Pakistani-American artist Anila Quayyun Agha that was not only spectacular conceptually with its play on shadow and intricacy, but also definitely, one of the most photographed(and instagrammed) pieces. For those who were looking for something beyond fine art, the chance to preview Amrapali’s upcoming museum in Jaipur, with a showcase of fine silver jewelry, stimulated excitement.

The four-day event is an example of the growing interest in Art in India, previously more dominant in the West. It did not only act as a homage to the of India’s Post-Independence art movement or the stars of Indian Contemporary art scene, but it is also a platform where young, upcoming artists have the opportunity to showcase their works.
