Step back into a royal era with Couturier Sabyasachi
"Not the alleys of Delhi, these are the canvas of an artist,
Each facet that I saw seemed liked a painting.”
- Mir Taqi Mir (1722 - 1810)
The king of lndian couture Sabyasachi stood graciously sporting a beard, agreeing to the mandatory ‘selfies’ with guests and media while taking out time in between personally for a tour of his grand boutique with a décor that spelled royal era. Situated at the popular One Style Mile near Qutub Minar area, New Delhi, the boutique is structured around a heritage monument that stands as the centerpiece of his boutique which flanks the monument with a grand staircase.
As you enter, you realize time stands still here transporting you to an era that is all about the fragrance of typical Indian ittars that you might have taken pains to source in the bylanes of old Delhi. It’s also about the very fragrant mogra flowers, placed strategically all around giving a pure white contrast to the dark decadent interiors and strains of Shehnai and Hindustani classical music from Banaras Gharana. You might just be standing in the middle of a royal Lucknow or a Hyderabadi haveli.
It is decorated with hand-fired Portuguese tiles, antique mirrors, an impressive collection of vintage photographs, lithographs, rich carpets and rugs layered with patina of age decorate the walls.
The turn of the century antique furniture, hand painted chandeliers with Dutch and oriental porcelain give the store its lush decadence. It is heightened with the Sabyasachi Art Foundation sculptures and art inspired by Qajar paintings from the Persian dynasty, Indian miniatures and calendar art.
Here the time stands still. Oh yes don’t forget to touch and feel the exquisite hand embroidered lehengas, saris, kurtas and the entire gamut of stunning collections that the maestro has been wowing the entire Bollywood, the Indian wedding industry and the fashionistas around the world. You might just want to take home a few!
