Snakes have always intrigued humans and so when the recently retired nib master Nobuyori Nagahara designed the Sailor’s King Cobra ll pens, it instantly becomes a master piece and a must have for pen collectors. Available in just 28 numbered pieces worldwide, this pen pays homage to the king of reptile kingdom, the king cobra.

Most limited editions pens are made with special nibs, but in this case it’s a special nib which has inspired the mighty pen. The unique artwork is by Maki-e artist Koushu Nishihara. He has used resin, egg shell, lacquer and abalone to give the king cobra a life-like look. The cap of the pen is detailed with small pieces of eggshells placed aesthetically to give texture and depth to the background in black resin. The inlaid abalone creates a heart pattern and below which is the signature of the artist in Kanji along with the limited edition number.

The beautifully hand crafted nib by Nobuyori’s son Yukio Nagahara is special in form and function. A closer view will show the nibs resembles to the head of a cobra ready to attack. Each of these painstakingly and passionately made King Cobra II Limited Edition fountain pen is made and provided by Sailor with a 21k King Cobra nib personally hand-crafted by nib master Yukio Nagahara.

The portrayal of the King Cobra is breathtaking, with eyes made of abalone to create a ruthless stare, and colorful lacquer portraying the cobra in a dangerous attack mode, this is a particularly imaginative use of Maki-e technique. The Cobra nib delivers ink to paper in a way unlike any other nib. The triangular footprint of the tipping, in the hands of an experienced writer, is amazingly expressive.
